The rumors about the singer’s sexual orientation have been going around for quite some time and so, this is not even the first time he had to address it. Shawn Mendes opened up about the topic during a brand new interview with The Guardian and admitted that he gets offended by people assuming all the time.
‘For me it’s hurtful. I get mad when people just assume things about me because I imagine people who do not have my support system and how it must affect them. That was why I was angry, and you can see that I still get riled up. When you come at me about something that is stupid you hurt many other people. They might not be speaking, but they are listening,’ Shawn explained to the news outlet.
In other words, the celeb feels like the way people assume his sexuality might affect others who actually are LGBTQ and struggle with coming out.
Shawn also addressed his Rolling Stone profile from last year when he shared that sometimes he feels like he has to be seen in public with girls just to ‘prove’ he is not gay.
‘It made me seem really creepy. If anything, that article made me realize your career is not over if people think you are not perfect,’ he told The Guardian.
As for the Rolling Stone article from last year, he explained at the time exactly why he feels like the assumptions about him affect the LGBTQ community so much.

‘I thought, ‘You f***ing guys are so lucky I’m not actually gay and terrified of coming out.’ That is something that kills people. That is how sensitive it is. You like my songs? Do you like me? Who cares if I am gay? Maybe I’m a little more feminine, but that is the way it is. That is why I am me.’
